COMMUNICATION
Major
Storytelling, advertising, film, television, and other forms of media have always been my passion. At PLU I learned to embrace my creativity through the communication department. There, I was able to combine my creative skills with my desire for serving the community around me by engaging in projects for non-profits and other organizations such as the Environmental Protective Agency's Safer Choice program. My major has allowed me to explore media, film, communication theory, group communication, and, of course, strategic communication. I also studied communication writing with AP formatting and I wrote articles, scholarly research papers, and professional press releases for organizations such as Tacoma Arts Live. Courses I have taken include: Introduction to Communication, Media Studies, Debate, Public Speaking, Writing in Communication Careers, Media Writing, Gender and Communication, Strategic Communication, Race and Film, Advertisement, and Communication Inquiry and Research.
SOCIOLOGY
Minor
In addition to community relations and media, I have always had a keen sociological mind. I enjoy studying and questioning the institutions that guide our society which led me to minor in sociology. Through the sociology program at PLU I explored the concepts of race, gender, class, religion and many other institutions. This gave me a unique perspective that allows me to communicate and empathize with people from all walks of life. Courses I took include: Race and Ethnicity, Sociology of Emotions, Family, and Gender and Violence, and more.
ENVIRONMENTAL STUDIES
Special Interest
I am very passionate about the environment and sustainability, which is why my original choice of major was environmental studies. For the first three years of my college career I was a communication and environmental studies double major. While scheduling conflicts prohibited me from completing this program, I took 80% of the required courses for the degree. I am well versed in the science, philosophy, and social implications of climate change, sustainability, and geoengineering. Some of the courses I took include: Environment and Sustainability, Environmental Policy, and Environmental Religion.
COMPUTER SCIENCE
Special Interest
My second choice for a minor was computer science because of my love for graphic design. While sociology became my central focus, I managed to take courses for the basics of computer science. Aside from my professional level skills in all Adobe Creative Suite software, I can code basic programs using Java and have studied the basics of database construction and management. Courses I have taken include: Introduction to Computer Science, Data Structures, and Databases and Web Programming.
